Fight for Public Involvement in Environmental Assessment Heads To Supreme Court

A long battle over the public’s right to be consulted on large mines and other industrial projects is now heading to the Supreme Court of Canada. The Supreme Court has decided to allow MiningWatch Canada to appeal the decision of the Federal Court of Appeal on the environmental assessment of the Red Chris mine in northern British Columbia.

Modernizing Mining in Ontario

Submissions to the Ontario Government's consultation process on modernizing the Ontario Mining Act. The initial deadline of October 15th for written submissions has now been extended to January 15, 2009. This will also mark the end of an extended period of consultation with Ontario’s First Nations.

Letter to Shareholder Group re: Human Rights Impact Assessment for Goldcorp's Guatemala Mine

This letter from MiningWatch Research Coordinator Catherine Coumans details serious concerns with the Human Rights Impact Assessment for Goldcorp's Marlin mine in Guatemala, announced April 24, 2008 as a response to pressure from shareholder groups. Shareholder initiatives should be carefully constructed so as not to harm the groups and communities they are supposed to be supporting.

Thanksgiving the “Cortez” Way - U.S. Ignores Western Shoshone Objections – Barrick Gold Readies Itself to Carve Up Mount Tenabo Spiritual Area

Barrick Gold Corporation, the world’s largest gold mining company, headquartered in Toronto, Canada, plans to construct and operate the mine, known as the Cortez Hills Expansion Project. The Project area is located entirely within the territory of the Western Shoshone Nation, recognized in the 1863 Treaty of Ruby Valley. The mine would blast and excavate a new massive open pit on Mount Tenabo over 900 acres in size, with a depth of over 2,000 feet.

News release: MiningWatch Canada has released an Alert to Investors regarding Petaquilla Minerals and its Molejón gold mine in Panama, timed to coincide with the company’s annual meeting in Vancouver (as well as the Mining Association of Canada's annual lobby day on Parliament Hill). The report documents a number of serious problems that are not being properly disclosed to investors.

An emerging coalition of conservation, Aboriginal, and social justice organizations is calling on the federal government to immediately stop the practice of allowing mining companies to use Canada’s lakes as dumping grounds for toxic mine wastes.

MiningWatch Canada Policy Statement on Uranium Mining

MiningWatch Canada takes the position that there should be a total moratorium on uranium exploration and new uranium mines across Canada. The conditions that would alter this position are stringent and unlikely to be met by the industry any time soon, if ever. MiningWatch Canada will continue to support communities seeking to clean up existing contamination and/or trying to monitor and enforce the strictest protective measures at uranium mine and mill sites.
