Alert to Investors re: Petaquilla Minerals and the Molejón Gold Mine in Panama

News release: MiningWatch Canada has released an Alert to Investors regarding Petaquilla Minerals and its Molejón gold mine in Panama, timed to coincide with the company’s annual meeting in Vancouver (as well as the Mining Association of Canada's annual lobby day on Parliament Hill). The report documents a number of serious problems that are not being properly disclosed to investors.

Tell Prime Minister Stephen Harper to stop blocking other countries’ right to know about the dangers of asbestos

[Urgent Action expired October 31, 2008 - pressure still needed!] Canada is one of the world's leading exporters of chrysotile asbestos but has little use for it at home. Ninety-six percent of the production from the three operating mines in eastern Québec is exported. Canada is standing in the way of chrysotile being listed on the Rotterdam Convention which would require that countries receive full information about the hazards and give their consent for imports to occur.

IUCN Assembly Opposes Mining In Central America

The World Conservation Union (IUCN), voted in its international assembly in Barcelona, October 5-14, 2008, that current mineral exploration and open pit metal mining permits be cancelled throughout Central America, and that strategic environmental assessments and other relevant instruments for environmental management be implemented and conducted in a rigorous manner, particularly in the Meso-American Biological Corridor. The measure would affect several proposed mines including the Petaquilla project in Panama and the Crucitas project in Costa Rica.

MiningWatch Canada Policy Statement on Uranium Mining

MiningWatch Canada takes the position that there should be a total moratorium on uranium exploration and new uranium mines across Canada. The conditions that would alter this position are stringent and unlikely to be met by the industry any time soon, if ever. MiningWatch Canada will continue to support communities seeking to clean up existing contamination and/or trying to monitor and enforce the strictest protective measures at uranium mine and mill sites.

Canadian Mining Investment in Southeast Ecuador Exacerbates Divisions, Conflicts

This analysis was undertaken following the publication of two letters accusing MiningWatch Canada “genocide” and of keeping the Shuar people of Southeast Ecuador in poverty. The letters make special reference to Corriente Resources’ ‘Mirador’ project. Although the letters are libellous and the people who wrote them obviously misunderstood the work of MiningWatch Canada, we felt that it was necessary to attempt to better understand the context from which these letters came.
